Wer sich noch an die ungewöhnliche Darstellung der Pietà oder Medusa der letzten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie ARTAe erinnert, weiss was gemeint ist. Die neun Musen, üblicherweise in wallenden Kleidern, künstlerisch inspirierend, stets gutgelaunt und vor allem schön, werden von Hauptmann als erotische Lustobjekte inszeniert. Haben sich die Töchter des Zeus etwa verausgabt? Schaffen sie es nicht mehr die Schriftsteller, Musiker, Maler anzuregen? Was ist nur mit den Musen los? Leiden die zeitgenössischen Musen etwa am Burnout-syndrom, schlafen sie vor Langeweile oder Ideenlosigkeit, oder sind sie gar in der Leipziger Schule eingenickt? Deutschland, Land der Ideen – haben die ideengebenden Musen eigentlich noch Kraft? Die neun Musen wurden von Hauptmann in einem Triptychon auf eine Länge von 420 cm gemalt und sind erstmals in Leipzig zu sehen. Ebenso eine Premiere in dieser Ausstellung ist das Meisterwerk „Besucher einer Ausstellung“. Wir, als Betrachter werden zum beobachteten Objekt. Kritisch äugt der amerikanische Portraitist, spekulierend ein berühmter Kunstsammler, neugierig ein junges Paar, wissend ein erfahrener Professor und verspielt ein kleiner Junge. Neben der grandiosen Komposition, Vielschichtigkeit und technischen Perfektion besticht dieses Bild durch die simple Frage, wie wir eigentlich Kunst betrachten und schließlich bewerten. Ist es ein Kennerblick, ein spekulativer Blick, ein verspielter.....und wer legt die Kriterien fest. Sabine Aichele-Elsner, Galerie ARTAe Leipzig Ab dem 11. Those who still remember the unusual representation of the Pietà or the Medusa from the last solo-exhibition in the gallery ARTAe, know what this means. The nine Muses, usually in flowing clothes, artistically inspired, always in a good mood, and above all beautiful, were designed as objects of desire. Have the daughters of Zeus overspent themselves? Do they stimulate the writers, musicians, and painters no longer? What happened with the Muses? Do the contemporary Muses suffer from burnout, or are they sleeping because of boredom or the lack of ideas, or do they even drop out of the “School of Leipzig”? Germany, country of ideas – do the Muses, which are imaginative, actually still maintain their power? The nine Muses were painted by Hauptmann in a triptichon on a length of 165 inches and are showing for the first time in Leipzig. The première of the masterpiece “Kunstbetrachtung 1” is also in this exhibition. We, as viewers get to be the watched object. The American portraitist looks critical, a famous art collector speculates, a young couple is curious, an experienced professor is knowing, and a little boy is playful. Besides the magnificent composition, the variety and the technical perfection of this artwork suggests the simple question: How do we actually look at art and ultimately assess it?
